Is your child learning English as a foreign language and looking to develop their reading and writing skills further?
I have extensive experience teaching online English reading and writing courses to children learning English as a foreign language. I currently teach students through an international education company based in Beijing, working with children who attend international schools abroad.
My lessons use carefully chosen children's books and stories as a starting point for developing reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar and comprehension. Children read and discuss stories, develop their understanding of English and use what they have learned in their own writing.
For some students, developing strong English skills is part of preparing for their future education in an English-speaking environment, including the possibility of attending a private school in the UK. I understand the importance of helping children develop not only accurate English, but also the confidence to read, write and communicate effectively.
Lessons are personalised to each child's age, English level and individual needs, and are delivered live online to children around the world.
These courses are designed for children who are learning English as a foreign language and would like to develop their reading and writing skills through engaging English-language books.
They are particularly suitable for children attending international schools or for children who are preparing for future education in an English-speaking school environment.
Lessons are adapted to suit each child's age, English level and individual learning needs.
Through the course, children develop:
Reading comprehension
Vocabulary
Grammar and sentence structure
Creative and extended writing
Spelling and punctuation
Speaking and discussion skills
Confidence using English
Each course is built around a carefully chosen children's book, with the story providing a fun and engaging context for developing English skills.
Before each class, children read a set number of chapters from the book. This gives them the opportunity to read at their own pace and become familiar with the story, characters and new vocabulary before joining the lesson.
During the live online lesson, we explore the chapters through fun, interactive activities. We discuss the characters and events, check understanding and develop reading comprehension.
Children also encounter new vocabulary from the story through games, activities and discussion, helping them understand and use new words in context.
The story then provides inspiration for a writing task. Depending on the child's age and English level, this might involve describing a character, continuing the story, writing from a character's point of view or creating their own piece of writing inspired by the book.
After each lesson, children have a writing and vocabulary task to complete before the next class. This gives them an opportunity to consolidate what they have learned and continue developing their English between lessons.
By working with children's literature in this way, children develop their reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and writing skills while also building confidence in using English.
Books are carefully chosen to suit the children's age, English level and interests. Examples of books I have used include:
Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
Wonder by R.J. Palacio
Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo
The Wild Robot by Peter Brown
Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl
Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan
Each book provides opportunities to explore vocabulary, comprehension, characters, themes and writing, while encouraging children to read for pleasure.
